Odfjell Oceanwind is a finalist in the 2021 New Horizon Idea Award

Written by Odfjell Oceanwind | Oct 12, 2021

Odfjell Oceanwind is, together with its partners Siemens Energy and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, a finalist in World Oil’s 2021 New Horizon Idea Award for its Mobile Offshore Wind Units (MOWUs) and WindGrid™ system.

The MOWUs are moored semisubmersible wind turbine units that can connect to oil and gas installations via a subsea cable and supply renewable energy onto the installation’s micro grid.

The WindGrid™ is a hybrid system consisting of energy storage and grid controls that enable the gas turbine and/or diesel generators on the host installation to halt during periods with wind power production, overcoming the challenge of spinning reserves. The MOWUs and WindGrid can thus provide up to 70% reduced emissions compared to conventional power generation from fossil fuels.

The MOWUs are designed as multi-location units that can easily be moved between different power consumers during their lifetime. They can also be used as part of a permanent wind farm producing electricity to the onshore grid.

The following criteria apply for the award: The winner of the New Horizons Idea Award is a company with a game-changing product, technology, or idea that redefines the industry’s thinking. The winner of this award symbolizes how the industry will operate in the future and will serve as a guidepost to the next generation of leadership entering today’s upstream energy sector. You can read more about the award here.

The winner will be announced on October 14th, 2021.
